Authorities have enforced a week-long lockdown at five Rohingya refugee camps in Teknaf and Ukhiya upazilas in Cox’s Bazar following a recent spike in Covid-19 infections in the district.

At the same time, the government has also announced a 10-day lockdown at Teknaf upazila to curb the spread of the deadly virus.

“As per the decision taken by the Cox’s Bazar District Corona Infection Prevention Committee, a lockdown has been enforced in Teknaf upazila from May 21 till May 30,” Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Parvez Chowdhury told Dhaka Tribune on Friday.

He also said  the lockdown will be enforced strictly and announcement in this regard were being made using loudspeakers in the upazila.

Meanwhile, Rohingya Refugee Camp 24 in Teknaf and Camp 2, 3, 4 and 15 have been placed under 7-day lockdown to clamp down of the spread of the virus.

Additional commissioner of Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner’s Office Mohammad Shamsuddoha confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

All activities inside the respective camps, apart from food and medicine supply, will remain suspended during the lockdown.

As many as 823 Covid-19 cases and 12 deaths have been recorded among the Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar, according to local health authorities.

Earlier, Arakan Rohingya Society for Peace and Human Rights leader Syed Ullah said people in the camps were living in fear due to the recent surge in Covid-19 there.

“The camps are crowded, so the risk [of being infected] is high. And many people do not know how to protect themselves from the virus,” he added.

Bangladesh currently hosts more than 1.1 million Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazar, most of whom entered Bangladesh after August 25, 2017 amid a military crackdown on them in Myanmar’s Rakhine State.
